SCITT Year 2021 / 2022

What inspired you to become a teacher?

My training officer in my first job as a biomedical scientist. She had the most amazing way of bridging the gap between academia and the real world. This inspired me to move into training and guest lecturing undergraduate biomedical science students at my local university. As I progressed through my career I enjoyed the training more and more and realised that this was where my passion lay. I found many graduates were poorly prepared for the world of work, even when undertaking job specific degrees. I felt it was really important to instil a link between school and industry, and develop well rounded individuals prepared to enter the world of work. I knew I enjoyed working with secondary school age children from my time assisting with instruction in martial arts. So after 17 years in the NHS, I took a deep breath and threw myself into the world of teaching.

Why did you choose Endeavour for your teacher training?

I chose Endeavour because of the holistic approach they have towards developing their trainees. They value the health and wellbeing of the trainee and discourage unnecessary pressures and unrealistic expectations. As a single parent and a career changer this was particularly important to me.

What was the best thing about the programme?

Meeting with my fellow trainees every Friday to discuss the highs and lows of the week, let off steam, give each other moral support.

What impact has the SCITT had on your career as a teacher?

The SCITT has enabled me to completely transform myself to become a teacher in numerous ways. I have developed a teaching persona, a classroom presence, confidence. I have a range of tools that I have developed for classroom management, developing and structuring resources for students. I have had access to a range of experts to develop my ideas and understanding of learning theory. Most importantly I have been in the school environment from day one and have a much better understanding of how schools work.

Describe your time on the SCITT in three words

Challenging. Worth It.

What advice would you give to prospective trainee teachers?

Set your own boundaries and routines for work. Have a time when you will put down tools and rest. Be realistic about what you can achieve. Accept that you will make mistakes. Ask for help and support. Make the most of the wealth of knowledge, experience, and support at your disposal.
